Professional Hypnotherapy

Ten Hypnotherapists will give you ten different explanations of what hypnosis or hypnotherapy is all about with much of the confusion brought about by the lack of knowledge about the phenomenon of the hypnotic trance, ill-trained therapists pushing their own misconceived theories and the misuse of this trance state for the purpose of entertainment and the making of money that goes with entertainment.

'Professional' Clinical Hypnotherapists do not discredit their work (and their professional ethics / image and fellow colleagues) by performing for comedic value where people are made fun of in various embarrassing scenarios. In much the same way can you imagine a member of the conventional medical professions charging money for people to come and watch their clients make fools of themselves?

Currently in New Zealand there are a large proportion of existing Hypnotherapists, many highly experienced who compare themselves as being superior to their peers openly endorse stage hypnosis and indeed perform on stage regularly and train others in stage processes. This attitude serves only to continue and reinforce the public's attitude that (clinical) hypnotherapy and hypnosis is a gimmick that benefits only the therapists bank balance.

The organizations to which I am aligned have always and will continue to be opposed to stage hypnosis and are intent on promoting the training of Hypnotherapists who believe 100% in the paramountcy of their clients. It is my belief that for the public and health professionals to have faith in the potential of hypnotherapy it is important for those of us wanting to advance the profession to vocally separate themselves from those calling themselves Hypnotherapists who continue to want to have a buck each way for the benefit of their financial bottom line.
